CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This is a course of linear algebra that is designed to introduce students to the matrix theory and systems of linear equations, elementary vector-space concepts, subspaces, linear independence, bases, linear transformations, matrix representation for linear transformations, change of basis to the orthogonal type and the eigenvalue problem.

The topical outline of course objectives is the following:

Chapter 1 Matrices and Systems of Linear Equations
Chapter 2 Vectors in 2-Space and 3-Space
Chapter 3 The Vector Space Rn
Chapter 4 The Eigenvalue Problem
Chapter 5 Vector Spaces and Linear Transformations

PREREQUISITE: Math 182 and CS 117 or CS 135.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course, students will be able to

  1. Solve system of linear equations, perform matrix operations, find the inverse of a matrix, check for linear independence.
  2. Work with vectors in the plane and space, find the dot product and cross product, find lines and planes in space.
  3. List the vector space properties for Rn, give examples of subpaces, find bases for subspaces, find its dimension, find orthogonal bases for subspaces, identify linear transformations.
  4. Find eigenvalues and eigenvectors, determinants, characteristic polynomial, perform diagonalization of a matrix.
  5. Give examples of vector spaces, check for linear independence, find bases and coordinates, dimension, identify linear transformations and find matrix representation for linear transformations.

TEST AND GRADING POLICY: There will be six (50 minutes) quizzes, one (1 hour and 15 minutes) midterm exam, and one (2-hour) final exam. The lowest two quizzes will be dropped. Each quiz is worth 10% and covers recently learned sections in the past two weeks. Each exam is worth 25%, where the midterm exam will test Chapters 1-3, and the remaining chapters/sections will be covered by the final exam.

Grades will be assigned on the basis of total 100 points, distributed as follows:

Four quizzes 10% each, total 40%
Two exams 25% each, total 50%
Homework 10%
Total 100

Final course letter grades will be assigned as follows:

A 95-100
A- 90-94
B+ 85-89
B 80-84
C+ 75-79
C 70-74
D 60-69
F 0-59

NOTE: Your grade will be based EXCLUSIVELY on the homework, quizzes and examinations.

CLASS POLICIES:

HOMEWORK:

The homework problems that you should work on after each lecture class are given on the assignment list https://sun.faculty.unlv.edu/Teaching/Math330/hw.html. You can access homework assignments through your account of Canvas. You are required to do the homework outside of class. Homework are collected on Monday by uploading your pictured homework through Canvas, and are checked and graded by the TA. During your discussion session on Friday, homework problems will be reviewed by the TA.

 

QUIZZES & EXAMS:

The scheduled quizzes are designed on the biweekly basis, will be given in the discussion class on every other Friday. The midterm exam will be given in the discussion class on Friday too in the 8th week. No textbook, notebook, cell phone or formula sheets are allowed in any test, but scientific (non-programmable and non-graphing) calculators are allowed during the test. You will receive your tests and grades back in the discussion class on the following Friday, additionally, tests will be reviewed by the TA during the discussion class.

 

ATTENDANCE:

You are required to attend lecture and discussion classes regularly. If you miss a class for any reason, you are responsible for all materials covered, tests taken and announcements made in your absence.

 

MISSED TESTS:

You have one chance to make up a missed quiz or midterm exam on the coming Monday (before the class) if you can provide an officially documented reason to excuse yourself for missing the regular test at least two days before the scheduled testing day. Note that the instructor is the only one who can judge and grant you to make up a missed test.

CLASS COURTESY:

Please use basic common courtesy and mute or turn off your cell phone before class. Private conversations cannot be allowed in class. Cell phone must be turned off during any tests.
