Math 428, Differential Equations II

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Differential Equations II (3 semester hours) contains theory and solution techniques for solving ordinary differential equations with constant and variable coefficients, systems of linear differential equations, Laplace transform, difference equations and numerical methods. Fourier Series; stability theory and autonomous systems.
The topical outline of course objectives is the following:

Chapter 6 The Laplace Transform
Chapter 7 Systems of First Order Linear Equations
Chapter 8 Numerical Methods
Chapter 9 Nonlinear Differential Equations and Stability
Chapter 10 Partial Differential Equations and Fourier Series
Chapter 11 Boundary Value Problems

PREREQUISITE: Math 283, 330 and 427.
 

TEST AND GRADING POLICY: There will be FIVE  (40 minutes) quizzes, a  (75 minutes) midterm exam, and a (2 hours) final exam. The lowest TWO quizzes will be dropped. Each quiz is worth 10%, and each exam is worth 35%. The quizzes usually occur once in every two weeks which will cover the recently learned 3-5 sections, The midterm exam will be based on chapters 6 – 8 and the final exam will cover chapters 9 – 11.

Grades will be assigned on the basis of total 100 points, distributed as follows:

Three quizzes out of five 10% each, total 30%
Two exams 35% each, total 70%
Total 100

In addition, on the top of the total 100 points, there will be 10% extra points directly coming from the in-class performance record of answering questions, and are going to be used to upgrade the overall grade.

Final course letter grades will be assigned as follows:

A 95-100
A- 90-94
B+ 86-89
B 80-85
C+ 76-79
C 70-75
D 60-69
F 0-59

NOTE: Your grade will be based EXCLUSIVELY on the examinations, homework, quizzes and the in-class performance record.

CLASS POLICIES:

HOMEWORK:

The homework problems that you should work after each lecture are on the assignment list. You are required to do the homework outside of class for each section after we have completed the lesson. The homework will not be collected in this semester, however, the quizzes and/or the examinations will be based on the assigned homework questions.

 

ATTENDANCE:

You are expected to attend class regularly. If you miss a class for any reason, you are responsible for all material covered, announcements made in your absence, and acquiring materials that may have been distributed in class.

 

MISSED EXAMS:

You will have one opportunity to make up a test given on a day you are absent if you can provide sufficient reason for missing the examination.

CALCULATORS:

A graphics calculator is useful as a study and learning tool when used appropriately. However, calculus is a collection of ideas which are not mastered through calculator skills only. Note that no calculators are allowed on tests.
