CATALOG DESCRIPTION: ADVANCED MATRIX THEORY AND APPLICATIONS (3 credits) contains rigorous mathematical treatment of orthogonal matrices, Gram-Schmidt method, Q-R factorization, least-squares fits, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, linear difference equations, systems of linear differential equations, unitary similarities, Schur's theorem, power method, quadratic forms, singular value decompositions, pseudo-inverse, systems of linear inequalities, and simplex method.

The topical outline of course objectives is the following:

Chapter 1 A Review of Elementary Matrix Algebra
Chapter 2 Vector Spaces
Chapter 3 Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors
Chapter 4 Matrix Factorizations and Matrix Norms
Chapter 5 Generalized Inverses
Chapter 6 Systems of Linear Equations

PREREQUISITE: Math 330 or equivalent. 

TEST AND GRADING POLICY: There will be two tests, each test will be worth 40%. The first test will be on chapters 1 – 3 and take 1 hour and 15 minutes,  the second test (final examination) will be on chapters 4 – 6 and take 2 hours.

Grades will be assigned on the basis of total 100 points, distributed as follows:

Homework 20%
Two tests 40% each, total 80%
Total 100

Final course grades will be assigned as follows:

A GRADE 90-100 POINTS
B GRADE 80-89 POINTS
C GRADE 70-79 POINTS
D GRADE 60-69 POINTS
F GRADE 0-59 POINTS

CLASS POLICIES:

HOMEWORK:

The homework problems that you should work after each lecture are on the assignment list. You are required to do the homework outside of class for each section after we have completed the lesson. Homework will be collected after one chapter is finished.

 

ATTENDANCE:

You are expected to attend class regularly. If you miss a class for any reason, you are responsible for all material covered, announcements made in your absence, and acquiring materials that may have been distributed in class.

 

MISSED EXAMS:

You will have the opportunity to make up an examination given on a day you are absent if you can provide sufficient reason for missing the examination.
