CATALOG DESCRIPTION: CALCULUS AND VECTOR ANALYSIS (4 credits) contains vectors, quadratic surfaces, vector-valued functions, functions of several variables, double and triple integrals, vector Calculus, line integrals, Green's Theorem, surface integrals, and Stokes' Theorem. The topical outline of course objectives is the following:

Chapter 10 Vectors and the Geometry of Space
Chapter 11 Partial Derivatives
Chapter 12 Multiple Integrals
Chapter 13 Vector Calculus (optional)

PREREQUISITE: Math 182. 

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: A student who successfully completes this course should be able to:

  • analyze position, velocity, and acceleration in two or three dimensions using the calculus of vector valued functions.
  • use partial derivatives to calculate rates of change of multivariate functions.
  • use multiple integrals to compute the volume, mass, center of mass, and related quantities for multivariate functions.
  • compute line integrals, including those representing work done by a variable force in a vector field.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to do the following:

  • use vector analysis to find equation of line and equation of plane in multi-dimensional settings.
  • find partial derivatives, directional derivatives, and gradient vectors.
  • solve extreme value problems by applying various techniques.
  • evaluate double, triple, and line integrals.
  • demonstrate intuitive understanding the main theorems in vector calculus.
  • solve application problems.

TEST AND GRADING POLICY:

There will be five (50 minutes) quizzes, one (1 hour and 15 minutes) midterm exam, and one (2-hour) final exam. Two lowest quizzes will be dropped. Each quiz is worth 12% and covers recently learned sections in the past 2-3 weeks. Each exam is worth 25%, where the midterm exam will test Chapters 10 & 11, and the remaining chapters/sections will be tested by the (noncumulative) final exam.

Grades will be assigned on the basis of total 100 points, distributed as follows:

Three quizzes 12% each, total 36%
Two exams 25% each, total 50%
Homework 14%
Total 100

Final course letter grades will be assigned as follows:

A 95-100
A- 90-94
B+ 85-89
B 80-84
C+ 75-79
C 70-74
D 60-69
F 0-59

NOTE: Your grade will be based EXCLUSIVELY on the homework, quizzes and examinations.

CLASS POLICIES:

HOMEWORK:

The homework problems that you should work on after each lecture class are given on the assignment list. You are required to do the homework outside of class. Homework are collected on Monday, and are returned to you in the breakout session on Friday, during which the homework problems are reviewed by the teaching assistant.

 

QUIZZES & EXAMS:

The scheduled quizzes are designed on the biweekly basis, will be given in the discussion class (the last 50 minutes) on every other Friday. The midterm exam will be given in the discussion class (the entirely 75 minutes) on Friday as well in the 8th week. You will receive your tests and grades back in the discussion class on the following Friday, additionally, tests will be reviewed by the teaching assistant during the discussion class.

 

ATTENDANCE:

You are required to attend class regularly. If you miss a class for any reason, you are responsible for all materials covered, and announcements made in your absence.

 

MISSED TESTS:

You might have one chance to make up a missed quiz or midterm exam if you could provide an officially documented reason to excuse your absence at least two days before the scheduled testing day. Note that the instructor is the only one who can determine if you could be allowed to make up a missed test.

 

CALCULATORS:

A graphics calculator is useful as a study and learning tool when used appropriately. However, calculus is a collection of ideas which are not mastered through calculator skills only. Therefore, the final number does not matter but only the step-by-step derivation matters in each test, though, scientific (non-programmable and non-graphing) calculators are still allowed during quizzes and exams.

Auditing Classes:

Auditing a course allows a student to continue attending the lectures and/or laboratories and discussion sessions associated with the course, but the student will not earn a grade for any component of the course. Students who audit a course receive the same educational experience as students taking the course for a grade, but will be excused from exams, assessments, and other evaluative measures that serve the primary purpose of assigning a grade. 

Classroom Conduct:

Students have a responsibility to conduct themselves in class and in the libraries in ways that do not interfere with the rights of other students to learn, or of instructors to teach. Use of electronic devices such as pagers, cellular phones, or recording devices, or potentially disruptive devices or activities are only permitted with the prior explicit consent of the instructor. The instructor may rescind permission at any time during the class. If a student does not comply with established requirements or obstructs the functioning of the class, the instructor may initiate an administrative withdrawal of the student from the course.

Final Examinations:

The University requires that final exams given at the end of a course occur on the date and at the time specified in the Final Exam schedule. The Final Exam schedule is typically available at the start of the semester, and the classroom locations are available approximately one month before the end of the semester. Incomplete Grades:

The grade of “I” (Incomplete) may be granted when a student has satisfactorily completed three-fourths of course work for that semester/session, but cannot complete the last part of the course for reason(s) beyond the student’s control and acceptable to the instructor, and the instructor believes that the student can finish the course without repeating it. For undergraduate courses, the incomplete work must be made up before the end of the following regular semester. Graduate students receiving “I” grades in 500-, 600-, or 700-level courses have up to one calendar year to complete the work, at the discretion of the instructor. If course requirements are not completed within the period indicated, a grade of “F” will be recorded, and the student’s GPA will be adjusted accordingly. Students who are fulfilling an Incomplete grade do not register for the course, but make individual arrangements with the instructor who assigned the “I” grade.

UNLV Writing Center:
